The Devaluation of Human Life

Something has gone terribly wrong in America today and human life is seen as cheap and expendable

The Dawning of Hope

When I was young, there was only one place that I grew to enjoy: Church. People made fun of me at school and I was brow beaten and put down at home. The one solace I had was Church. People there treated me like a peer. They seemed to value my input and seemed eager … Continue reading The Dawning of Hope

Is There A Secular Community Out There?

Now that I'm acclimated to the atheist online scene, I'm itching to get involved with a secular community but there doesn't seem to be one here in Central North Carolina.

Is Christmas Weird for You?

My wife thought it was odd that I was listening to so much Christmas music this year as an atheist. I have to admit that I had realized it as well. It took a few days before I pieced together that a general change in perspective I'd been experiencing had been accelerated by a change … Continue reading Is Christmas Weird for You?

Why Donald Trump, and His Supporters, Scare the Hell Out of Me

Donald Trump and his supporters scare the hell out of me. And they should scare the hell out of you as well. Frank Luntz, a Republican consultant, recently conducted a focus group with Trump supporters and this was what he told the press that had been watching from behind one-way glass when the focus group … Continue reading Why Donald Trump, and His Supporters, Scare the Hell Out of Me

Transgender 101

When I began a tumblog in 2007 I had no idea that it would lead me to understand and accept many who seemed very different from myself but, now that I understand, I'd like to pass that understanding along.

Tomorrowland is Infectiously Optimistic and Helps You to Keep Giving a Damn

Though I had enjoyed all of the previews I’d seen for Tomorrowland, I was skeptical going in. Mostly that was from seeing so many bad reviews and knowing that it did poorly in its opening weekend. However, having now seen it, I don’t understand why so many are so down on this movie. Tomorrowland provides … Continue reading Tomorrowland is Infectiously Optimistic and Helps You to Keep Giving a Damn

I Am Openly Secular

I've been struggling for several months to write one or more posts on the fact that I have determined that I am an atheist. In fact, I have probably at least five drafts of posts saved that I began but was never able to complete satisfactorily. However, I also feel that the fact that I have not declared the fact that I am now an atheist and a humanist is hindering me from posting many other things I'd like to post that begin with the assumption that you already know I'm an atheist.

US State Department Admits “We Cannot Kill Our Way Out of This War”

Apparently the political and religious right are pitching a fit about the admission by a spokesperson for the US State Department that America, or indeed anyone, can win this battle by trying to kill all of the violent and fundamentalist Muslims. The fact is that the more violent Muslims that are killed, the more new … Continue reading US State Department Admits “We Cannot Kill Our Way Out of This War”

Rethinking Western Secularism in Light of our Muslim Populations

Since the Protestant Reformation began, Europe had been plunged into war after war. One nation against another, countrymen at each others throats, and even family members torn apart because of the perceived need for government to have what each side felt was the "right religion." The United States was among the first to embrace the … Continue reading Rethinking Western Secularism in Light of our Muslim Populations

Most of You Have No Idea What Martin Luther King Actually Did

Growing up as I did on television in the 1970s and '80s, I got the distinct impression that racial discrimination was something that had been dealt with, that the problem was one of the past except for a few ignorant people. What I saw on television was my only understanding of racism because, while I … Continue reading Most of You Have No Idea What Martin Luther King Actually Did

Should I Stay or Should I Go?

When I was younger I was taught (and fully believed) that Progressive Christians weren’t real Christians. They were dangerous people who didn’t want to sacrifice their comfortable worldly lives and so perverted the Church to make it more like the world. They were to be avoided and even despised for the harm they were bringing … Continue reading Should I Stay or Should I Go?
